My five year old and I were excited to start this project, but it's not so great for beginner sewers when parents don't sew much. The book assumes we all have the same scissors, the right size needles for the thread provided, and stuffing. Would be nice if the product provided all necessary materials (at least stuffing and needle).

I gave this to my 5-year-old granddaughter for Christmas. She could hardly wait to get started and immediately sewed the felt duck and stuffed it. I was afraid that she might stick herself with a pin or needle, but that turned out to be a non-issue. The inclusion of a needle and a few straight pins would be a good addition to the kit. When I saw how well she took to sewing, I purchased needles, pins, a pin cushion, and some additional felt along with a couple of plastic lidded boxes for supplies to get the child started and to teach good sewing habits.

My daughter is 7, and loved getting this book for chanukah! the illustrations are very clear, and we were happy it came w/ a few felt pieces to start a project with. Just wish it came w/ the needle it recommends. I didn't purchase one, and just used one i have, but the head is not that large, so she's not learning to thread the needle yet. So make sure if you buy this, you get the right kind of needle with it.
