I’ve taken some pretty great tours with Grasshopper (Vietnam, Japan) but my Thailand self guided was a disappointment ( which is ironic since Grasshopper originated in Thailand). The route was out of date and didn’t map changes in road (new construction) and only two of the 10 lunchtime restaurants recommended actually existed. (Note: that means you’re riding 40 ish miles in heat and humidity without a recommended lunch break. Thankngod for 711). Most of the hotels were fine but one had nothing that was promised (restaurant, spa) and sheets smelled of mildew. The route was pretty straightforward so what one is really paying a touring company for is restaurant and hotels that are better than what you’d find yourself on Google Maps and on this trip I do t think that goal was met. The bike itself was functional but then weighed it down with extra equipment (two tubes one of which was faulty and a wrench??) which made riding more of a chore than a pleasure. Plus when that second faulty tube left me without a back up after my first flat they said the could not provide another and recommended a shop off the route to buy my own. You get the idea. Plus I kept running into other solo tourers and groups we go were clearly all on better trips. Grasshopper has to fix this route up - or I’d recommend going with another company in Thailand.

Hi Claire - thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback, and we’re truly sorry that your self-guided experience in Thailand fell short of the standards you enjoyed on our other tours. We want to reassure you that we are conducting a full route inspection imminently to ensure all mapping, restaurant recommendations, and logistics are fully up to date. The hotel that did not meet expectations has already been replaced, and our Thailand team is reviewing the equipment provided on self-guided trips—while the wrench included is essential for pedal removal if needed, we also recognize your frustration regarding the spare tubes, and we’re tightening our support processes so that guests are never left without the essentials on the road. Up to now, our self-guided guests in Thailand have generally had very positive experiences, but we fully understand your concerns and appreciate you bringing them to our attention. Please know that we are addressing each issue you raised so future tours meet the level of quality you—and we—expect.
My friend & I had an excellent time on this ride. Grasshopper provided top notch equipment and service throughout.
