“We did spend 5 days this week in a « premium beach cottage » at Non such bay. We were aware of the self catering aspect, but not that the closest supermarket required a 30 minutes drive. Yet, that wasn’t the main issue. The main issue is that the hotel beach is overwhelmed with sargasso, which is an eye irritating seaweed that floats, piles up on the beach, gets dry… and smells terrible. So the beach was not usable, and nor was our terrasse because of the smell. As a consequence, no water sports were possible, and the housekeeping lady told us that it was the case since the hotel reopened after the lockdown, so obviously, « limited » water sports should not even be mentioned at the booking time. We are fully aware that the sea conditions and natural events are not under the control of the hotel. The problem is, sargasso did not appear overnight during our stay. It had been there for quite some time, because the hotel had installed a floating device on the water in order to limit the volume of seaweed reaching the beach. So in our opinion, there is somehow a disclosure issue here, because we certainly would not have booked a beach cottage if we had known that situation. Of course we spoke to hotel staff, but there were few management representatives unfortunately. Local staff were nice and doing their very best, but they did not have a decision power. They advised us to book the hotel boat ride to a small island nearby to enjoy some snorkelling, but also told us that we would be charged 15USD per person for it ! Of course we declined. Due to this situation, during our stay we drove a lot around to find a decent beach and found out that some of the other resorts on the same eastern coast of the island, which has been badly hit with sargasso for several weeks, had decided to simply close. On the day we checked out, we finally met a hotel management representative. Our feedback was received quite coldly, saying that « we could use the pools » and that « we should have made this feedback earlier in order to be moved to another room (up on the hill to avoid the smell : these rooms are clearly not at the same rate as the beach cottages). Moreover, they would not consider any form of compensation or refund because we did not book directly through them. We are definitely going to write a factual TripAdvisor review about Nonsuch but we would like to know your position on our situation. Our holidays are not over yet and we are flying to St Martin tomorrow, looking for a villa to finish on a more enjoyable note.
