This matcha is ok, it tastes quite bitter. For people who drink matcha very regularly and prefer theirs on the strong side (2 teaspoons matcha per drink or more), know that it's a bit of a let down when the matcha is very bitter. However this does the job as my favourite brand of matcha (Purechimp) has been out of stock for a very long time, the smell of the powder has a natural **, and doesn't taste bitter, whereas this one and a lot of others smell more on the sour side. The smell of matcha is how you can tell the quality without tasting it first- sweet= very good, usually not bitter or barely, sour= bitter. But this matcha is good value for money and good for baking aswell so it will suffice.A trick I learned is to add a pinch or 2 of salt into your matcha to get rid of some bitterness (this works for coffee as well), there is science behind it. With this matcha I do have to usually add sugar or honey (or other pairings down below) as it's too bitter. If you are a new matcha drinker, I recommend getting a small sifter, and an aero latte matcha frother (bamboo), unless you are interested in looking after a proper matcha whisk go for it :)Additionally, you can use a metal handheld frother but there is something about the metal that takes away the nutrients and health benefits (you can look up the science), though if you are not fussed about the health benefits and just care about the taste then that's fine. Also another tip if you want to enjoy your matcha while reaping the health benefits, use a milk alternative, though it can be watery sometimes I prefer almond milk because it's really subtle. Alot of ** alternative milks usually have oils in them! But if you don't care about that, M&S soy and oat milk is really nice, and also Mighty milk (made from peas) is really nice.Use warm water for this (not boiling, the higher the temp of water you use the more bitter, you can still turn the kettle on but stop it before it boils - I stop it when you open the lid and you can see steam). Don't use too much water, you can guesstimate about 50-100ml to bloom the matcha.Sift your matcha (try 1 teaspoon to begin with and see whether it is strong enough for you- usually later on you will find you'll want it a bit stronger), into the water and then use your frother for a minute or 2- for a smoother foam on top tap the cup or thing you're whisking in to get rid of big air bubbles, for the traditional bamboo whisk make sure you follow all the steps (look online) and whisk in a zigzag ('W' or 'M' motion).Add 200-300ml hot or cold milk and ice if you want.In the summer sometimes I whisk the the sifted matcha powder right into the cold milk and add ice :)Good flavour pairings: a few drops of vanilla extract or vanilla syrup, white chocolate- you can melt some squares into milk to make a sauce, strawberries- syrup or microwaved mashed up strawberries with a bit of sugar/honey, mango -syrup or fresh also mashed up, or canned puree.
