“Pond is 5 years old and about 15,000L with 3 tiers...top 1,000L, Middle 1,000L and bottom 13,000L. Fish stock is about 200 medium sized goldfish. For all this time there was only an Oase pump feeding the top pond which then cascades into the middle and bottom tiers. Managing fish waste has been an ongoing challenge and none of the home made solutions could both capture the waste and be easily cleaned.
About 10 days ago I installed 2 Matala Biostep10 units (no UV and no waterfall) with valves to balance flows between the two. Overnight, each of the two are gravity fed at about 1,000L/hour and during the day they are pump fed at about 5,000L/hour. I also added 3 Matala brushes where the UV unit would normally go.
The results have been extraordinary. Historically water clarity has ranged from not bad (for a day or 2 after water changes) to varying degrees of murky the rest of the time. Within 3 days the water was crystal clear and has remained that way ever since. Pad and brush cleaning is about every 3-4 days...or when I think the flow has dropped off a bit too much...which is directly related to the level of fish stock...which is considered to be fairly high.
As I have placed my units within the water course between Tiers 1 and 2 I do not have to worry about any overflow but if the unit is outside the actual pond then you will need to keep an eye on your flows because when the media gets too, full water will escape through the overflow slots and possibly from under the lid.
The results have been so good I am now installing the Matala EzBio 20 Pre-Filter Double Core on all my pumps.”
