Turns out the monitor has a DisplayPort. Who knew?
I was blaming the monitor, but this cable was cheap enough that it was worth a shot. Looks like the mDP-DVI adapter was going west. Monitor saved! And it is so much neater that the adapter+DVI setup I had before. Anyone want a cheap DVI cable?”
