Koalas in the northern parts of Australia are smaller and don't have as thick fur as those in the south. This could be because they don't need the extra warmth in the colder winters as the southern koalas do. The koala has one of the smallest brains in proportion to body weight of any mammal, being 60% smaller than that of a typical diprotodont.
