Basic black primer is a necessity and Army Painter is one of the best for priming miniatures.

I needed a black primer. I had been using Krylon or Rustoleum, whichever was available at the time at my local Walmart, but the nozzle always seemed to clog up about halfway through the can. There seems to be a spray paint shortage where I live, so I decided to try this out. It was more expensive, but it sprays better and also appears to give a more even coating. It also works on some Reaper minis which don't always take to spray paint primer. Worth it for me even tho it was more expensive.

Decided to drift away from citadel paints (the only I can get around here) and I'm super happy with the switch. And Miniature Market got it to me pretty quick anytime I've been in a pinch for a certain color.

This hands down are the best primer for the price you can use for your miniatures. Cheap & effective. Does not obscure details on models and the actual nozzle of the can is easier to spray with, leaving less hand strain after an army. For 10 dollars, this is the way to go.
