“The Spy Game RPG lives up to its title and more. The modified 5E system mechanics are smoothly integrated for modern day espionage. My initial impression was some of the character class features were overpowering. But, as I began playing the game, I found these abilities fit perfectly with the heroic spy tales that the game tells. It role plays just like a modern action spy movie, James Bond, Mission Impossible, or The Kingsman series, for example. Yes, it feels over the top, but that just adds to the fun. As far as game play, the system focuses on infiltration, combat and hacking. And a neat concept called “caliber” compliments each of these. Caliber is a level based measurement that determines gear availability, task difficulty, experience awarded and currency for missions. And, yes, gear includes those wonderful gadgets that all the heroes use in the movies. retractable Bladed boots, X-ray Glasses, Face Recognition Software and so much more. The hacking is eloquent and simple compared to many other RPG systems. There are a variety of hacking programs/tools available, based on caliber, that allow a myriad of options. For example, there are password crackers that take penetrate firewalls. And the added tension that these rounds take only heightens the mission’s adrenaline rush. The firewalls require either bypassing the security versus a difficulty check or brute force, hacking the armor class and whittling down the defensive hit points. Plus, they have nominated The Spy Game for several 2021 ENnie RPG awards, including Best Rules. For me, The Spy Game is the go to RPG for really fun and immersive secret agent gaming. I highly recommend those who enjoy this genre to try The Spy Game, even if you are not familiar with the 5E mechanics. All the rules needed to play are in this rulebook. Enjoy!”
