Having realised that this was not the case on Friday afternoon I took both phones to a Carphone warehouse store that had a "geek" service,
Unfortunately the very helpful person there told me that he could not deal with everything as the "Settings" icon was not working and he suggested that I should return the phone and get a replacement. I will call you tomorrow to ensure that I return the faulty phone to the correct address. The phone is a lot harder to navigate than the curve but this is probably because it has more functions.
