I'm an outreach volunteer at a respected botanic garden in California. I use Arthropod Blocks Sets 1 and 2 at school science nights because the kids and parents love handling them and looking at them more closely under a microscope. Sometimes it's difficult to get kids to engage with native plants which don't growl, chirp, pounce, swim or poop interestingly, but if you can communicate how all wildlife (including mammals, birds, fish, insects, and microorganisms) depend on plants, o' plants begin to gain stature. I wrote brief tags for each arthropod titled "What good is a scorpion?" (locust, ant, etc.) so that people can see their role in a healthy ecology. By presenting just a little more information with these arthropod blocks, a "Wow! Look at this!" reaction becomes linked to a learning experience.

I like that my daughter can look at the arthropods without wings and legs falling off... makes it more hands on and helps with frustration of learning to look at delicate things under a scope. She has really enjoyed these.
