A great gift, but do try to shop around as it does seem to be extremely expensive these days.

First off, this is NOT pre-assembled! It is however a great kit and a great way to learn about superhet's and how they work. They include excellent instructions, including testing steps along the build process to ensure things are going as planned. Tools needed are small Phillips screwdriver, soldering iron (solder is provided), multimeter, small pliers and wire nippers. Tools that are not needed but nice to have are an oscilloscope, generator, and solder sucker (in case of any mistakes). You will also need either a 9 volt dc power source or a 9 volt battery. Soldering skills are also required, as everything is soldered into place. I would recommend minimum age of 16, but if you are an electrical prodigy or are buying this for someone who is, the age could be lower. I have done other projects from this company, and in the unlikely event there is a part missing, they will quickly send a replacement out.

A blast from the past and a decent radio, too.Perfect for a novice builder and includes a very complete manual with some training materials at the end of each chapter. The parts are held on small cards that list the value for the part, the colors of the resistors and the part number (designator). The parts are in value order on the cards from highest to lowest and the resistor part number is above the actual part - pay attenstion to the colors printed to the right of the part number. What makes this kit interesting is that it is entirely analog and uses discrete components that are very hard to find online, such as the variable capacitor for tuning and the FM/AM Intermediate Frequency transformers. Only one company, Mouser, has any in stock made by Xicon and a few sources from China. Kudos to the folks at Elenco for making this kit!

This is a kit and a radio course To be able to perform soldering is a differential, as well as the guidelines for use of signal generator and oscilloscope. I hope in the future to find more electronic offerings in this line.

So far this is the best AM/FM Radio Kit that I assembled. Instructions are very easy to follow that makes the assembly very easy. But most all, is the explanations of how AM/FM radio works with test points for voltmeters or RF/Audio generators or oscilloscope in every phase all along until finished.
