Elenco WeMake AM/FM Radio Kit (IC and Transistor) Reviews

4.2 Rating 138 Reviews
Cheap board construction. Be careful when soldering. Has good instructions and explains the operation well. Seems overpriced for what it is.

We bought this for our son who loves to tinker. He is enjoying it so much and has been engrossed with it for days.

The special thing about this kit is that the parts that are soldered to the board are placed like on the printed diagram. So you can exactly see which part is doing what in the superhet receiver.

Good explanation of the parts and concepts. Exercise questions to test your understanding. Clear diagrams. Tools needed: soldering iron, rosin core solder, needle nose pliers, flush cutters, wire strippers. Test instruments that would be nice to have: continuity tester, multimeter, oscilloscope.

I purchased this kit for my boyfriend for his birthday. Here is what he said about itPro's;1. Kit and instructions actually teach you how the radio works as well as how to assemble it. I would strongly recommend using a multimeter, but I did not have any of the other test equipment.(you dont need it) The radio turned out great without using the optional test equipment but it would have been more fun to test it that way if I had access to an Oscilloscope, signal generator, etc. but it is in no way required.2. Although I would recommend doing a simpler solder type kit before attempting this one, the solder traces were large enough to make it easy to solder each component without bridging.3. Great sensitiviy/selectivity. I can tune in too many stations to count on AM and most stations on the FM band.4. I found this kit to be challenging enough to keep my interest, yet still fun to make. Construction took me a few hours a night for 4 nights from start to finish. I would recommend following the instructions very closely and taking your time.Cons:1. The plastic base which holds the radio upright needs a deeper groove. This stand does not work and the radio will fall over when placed in it. I use the included speaker carton (hot glued to board) to keep the radio upright, this works but the base should work.2. After extensive tuning adjustments following the instructions, I was only able to tune from about 92MHZ to 107.9MHZ on FM. This constitutes the majority of the FM band, but not all of it (87.7MHZ to 107.9MHZ).Summary: A great kit for someone with some soldering experience who is interested in building a radio and learning how it works. The negatives I listed above ar comparatively minor and overall, I am very happy with it.

The kit arrived on time. Packaging is very simple looking. Just a plain white box, but all the parts were there, and my son is busily putting the thing together. No feedback yet on whether or not it works since he's not done.
