Elenco Auto-Scan FM Radio Kit Reviews

4.1 Rating 482 Reviews
I haven't received it yet but I know this company makes high quality educational, fun toys. I give them away all year as birthday and holiday gifts. I always buy their circut games for children. I'm glad to find other items to gift. It's always their favorite toy.

Great little radio kit to introduce kids into electronics. Can be built quick enough to keep their interests up but difficult enough so they actually learn something and end up with a FM radio.

Kit is well organized with clear directions. I used this to help learn soldering. Between the directions on this and some youtube videos, I feel like I really have soldering down now. Radio works great. I did not put c21 in, based on reviews I read, but did put in c*. Took some fiddling with the 4 turn coil to get radio stations to come in. One more thing: I lost (my fault) the two coils that came with the kit. An email to Elenco fixed that problem. The mailed me free replacements. The replacements came quickly. Would buy again. I plan on ordering other kits and teach my kids some soldering.

Works Ok but generally very poor - used them for a solder class and finished radio just not very good but does demonstrate concept.

Great little radio project but not for a total newb beginner. There a few very small or fine solders and takes a steady hand and excellent soldering skills to complete properly. I bridged the IC socket and pretty much ruined the board trying to fix it. Though at the time my solder skills where pretty much non existent. I've improved markedly and will buy another kit or attempt to fix this one at some point in the future. I enjoyed the experience and learned a lot even though I failed to get it working properly (so far). As my skills improve, I have no doubt I will be able to repair my mistake and get it working properly. This kit is very well documented but expects some basic knowledge of circuit diagram reading and intermediate solder skills but walks you through each step very clearly. I would not attempt this as a first project or crash course in soldering lol. Start with something which IS considered beginner if you are just learning to solder. Then do this project after that. You'll enjoy it far more and have a working radio in the end! Nice Kit and well documented! Enjoyed working on it!

Does not work :( Instructions are not very clear, their not written properly for beginners, and most of the time it is extremely confusing. It was my first soldering project and was excited about making my first FM radio. I did exactly as instructed and was very careful to solder and put each piece in it's proper place. Did not work, though I do get static and the led comes on. I called the company during business hours, no one picked up and no one called me back when I left my number. Lame, I'm really sad and disappointed, it's a piece of crap. My brother said it was probably a bad schematic design (he works with electronics) all I can do is scrap the parts and use them on my breadboard.
