Freewing F-4D Phantom II High Performance 90mm EDF Jet - PNP Reviews

4.8 Rating 146 Reviews
The new F-4 Phantom II is an impressive model in the air. With the model properly trimmed it practically flies itself off the runway. I still haven't mastered the proper landing approach as I have problems judging the airspeed and the model is a bit pitch sensitive. Lateral and rolling stability are very good. I have broken the 5mm pivot wire in the nose gear twice but a wheel axle of the same diameter seems to be a permanent fix.

Happy to receive my Phantom but had some Quality Control issues which Martin did his best to correct. Have purchased many products from Motion RC and will continue to due so, package arrived undamaged and this is a gorgeous EDF. I served on the USS Forrestal CVA-59 and watched these fantastic Aircraft in action. Maiden Jun 01 2018 as per set-up and she flew very well. 4 stars due to QC not Motion. Rich M.

I have been clamoring for a giant size, scale, foam F-4 Phantom for over a decade. My only experience with a Phantom before this model was the FMS version which flies like you would think a Phantom flies: Like a brick with wings. The scale outline and quality of this model is truly exceptional. I had no problems putting it together and I followed the throws/rates/CG by the manual to a tee. The maiden was a complete non-event. So incredibly easy to fly with no real bad habits. I didn't even need to give it a lick of trim which really blew my mind. Very lightly wing-loaded which was a surprise for the size. I have the 6S version and I was concerned that the 9 blade wouldn't sound very good but it sounds great. The fan was balanced perfectly out of the box. I may spring for the 8S version (I do heart me some WOOOOSH) just for the extra MPH but I don't feel like I am missing out with this 6S in any way.Trying to think of some negatives but I honestly can't think of any. Outstanding model from nose to nozzle.

Got the F-4 and it went together without any problems except snaking elevator, rudder and tail light wires through the fuse to the cockpit area (receiver).Had to make my own wire with a smaller loop at end to get it to snake easily.Caution: be sure to check the glue or lack of glue on the cockpit canopy. Mine was totally loose in the front where the wind could've grabbed it and it would've been gone.My maiden was a bit scary and for the following reasons: 1. took off on short, manicured, smooth grass. It took awhile to get rolling even at full throttle. If you're flying on grass, you'll need plenty. Without the proper speed to rotate up, she'll tip stall. careful......2. Ad a ton of expo to the elevators. Wow, my F-4 took off to the clouds in a shot!! And I had 45% expo and dialed down travel to 50%. I had the elevators at neutral set to the 8mm of up trim they suggested. 3. Had to add a ton of right trim to the ailerons. She want to veer left even with surface controls set perfectly.4. Had to mix in some rudder (adding 7% rudder) to the ailerons. She banks with ailerons but the turn isn't really there like my other warbirds. 5. Lost power at 2:50 minutes. (5000 6 cell-- 40c) She did a gentle belly flop into tall grass--whew, no damage at all. Granted, I was running her up and down the runway a few times to check steering prior to maiden....but you might want to start your timer at 2:30 and adjust up accordingly on future flights if batteries have sufficient juice after landings.6. "Maiden II" later this week. Will follow up on whether my tweaks have helped.

I received my F-4 in the first round deliveries for pre orders (late March 2018). I love this F-4 Phantom.Suggest following guidance in the RCG thread for control throws. Stock control throws are too aggressive. OTOH, the listed CG in manual is safe to fly and an excellent place to start. Most will walk that back by several mm after the first few flights for a more neutral, efficient setting. The ducting in this model is outstanding. Probably the best ducting in an ARF jet I've seen, and this is saying a lot since it's a bifrucated exhaust that lends itself to many issues if not done totally correctly. They really got this correct, and it's a critical success factor in the F-4's ability to fly VERY WELL on stock 6s power. I'm a higher power EDF guy by nature but I'm completely satisfied flying this jet 6s stock PNP. I do like using higher capacity packs however. Stay light to fly light but you can go as fat as 920g or so if you push the battery tray aft to the aft battery bay foam wall (ahead of the RC power distribution board mounted on the upper foam shelf aft of the battery). On a light weight 5000mah pack you are looking at 2:45 flights unless you allow yourself to throttle back. This jet flies very well at 50 percent throttle. Not many do. If you fly scale air show passes and aerobatic routines you'll get 3:20 on a 5000mah pack but be careful, pushing the power will reduce that. I am flying 5 minute to 5:30 flights on an 8000mah set of packs that I have for my A-10. I love this F-4 Phantom on those larger packs for the duration and the weight is not a problem. The landing gear and equipment on board has been reliable and well made. Everything looks great. The cockpit is small due to the jet scale size but some detail can be played with by buying the 3D parts set available. I have that, as well as scale exhaust nozzle upgrades on order, do not have them yet. This jet likes to be flown like a highly swept, semi-delta wing jet. Stablized approach. Low power on final approach to modulate proper sink rate when you have your flaps set. Idle power and flaps/gear will slow this thing down fast, so be ready to add approach power again to stabilize if you chop power. Sink rate increase means vert slight power increase. Be responsive on your throttle control, don't just gob power on or hack power off. A fine control of throttle is as important as a fine control of elevator. Easy to do, just requires intention. If the nose is pointed down you are going too fast. Flat body angle for approach and hold that flat body angle on approach for the ideal speed on final. Modulate power for sink. This jet is easy to learn on but some patience is required to fly her the right way. After a few flights it's second nature.I give value "good" for overall. I wish the scale nozzles came stock. It's actually closer to Very Good but I felt I'd make that point. I give "average" for ease of operation. Assembly is Very Easy but the flight control recommendations are unacceptably aggressive for anyone (please get these sorted on newer releases). By nature of the subject flying will require some level of previous EDF experience IMHO unless you have an experienced EDF person to help you on the first couple flights to calm the nerves. Everything else is great on this plane considering the subject, quality and price. Very nice - VERY NICE work, MRC and FW - Thank you!

Not really feeling qualified to write a real review since mine still has not been flown. The foam quality is very good as is the paint. Overall QC was a fail though since mine arrived with the ESC laying loose in the battery compartment instead of attached to the motor and a few other little nuisance items. Easy enough t fix but shouldn't have had to fix them.
