“These temperature-sensing probes do not come standard with the SkyRC 400W DuoCharger, so when MotionRC offered them at a fantastic price, I purchased a pair to augment charging of my large Lipo Heli batteries. Before actual use, I tested the sensitivity of the charger/sensor by strapping a sensor to a container and pouring in boiling water. Even when the surface temperature, as measured by my infrared thermometer, registered the 'trigger temperature', my charger would not consistently alarm. SkyRC technicians were very helpful in conducting their own experiments (on video) explaining that there can be a significant lag between surface and core (battery) temperatures. They explained the default temperature in the DuoCharger is set for nickel-metal hydride batteries which they state are more prone to overheating with charging than Lipo batteries. SkyRC recommends decreasing the 'trigger temperature' to 35-40 degrees C for use with Lipo batteries. After much testing, I can verify that the 'over-temperature' function with these sensors does work. The alarm did sound and charging stop when the set temperature was exceeded, but on occasion by as much as 6-7 degrees C. These sensors might be a nice addition, especially for those charging nickel-metal hydride batteries, but in my opinion, should never replace conscientious safe charging practices.”

“Given the $5 price tag, this is a good insurance if you decide to push high charging current (to save time) or squeeze life out of an old battery (to save money buying a new LiPo). Either way good to have, but not mandatory. Also, it's within a couple degrees accuracy but it doesn't need to be accurate just to stop short of a LiPo a fire.”

“Just getting back into the rc hobby and reading all the horror stories about the lipo batteries catching fire and even exploding, I was a little concerned. The temp. Sensor works perfectly I was able to watch the temperature while charging taking the concerns away.”
