“I live in NYC & use my home as a studio for making fashion items so there’s a lot of silk & wool fabrics on hangers along with a ton of clutter because I’m your stereotypical designer that has a lot of unnecessary “pretty” objects & all of it accumulates massive amounts of dust! I pre-wash all my fabrics & they aren’t on rolls so it isn’t a typical industrial work studio, but there’s a lot of fabric everywhere.
Dust is my nemesis & my Miele vacuum cleaner is aside from my sewing machines, my favorite tool I’ve ever bought, & Airdog x5 now joins that list. Recently I sealed my bedroom windows shut along every seam with heavy duty tape in an attempt to mitigate the dust that flows in. Initially it helped, but the dust soon returned & the Airdog helped me figure out why. More on that later.
We have an older BlueAir model that uses hepa filters which in theory needs to be changed once every 12 months, but have discovered in air-polluted NYC, that’s not
the case & they actually need to be changed out closer to every 4 months, which is exorbitantly expensive at $90 a pop. What I’ve read & witnessed first hand is that once the filters are clogged, it just blows the dust back out. Vacuuming it doesn’t help according to science papers I’ve read on the matter. The BlueAir is now just another surface to put stuff on since getting the Airdog.
We’ve only had the Airdog x5 for 5 days & I definitely love it, but there are some caveats on how I will use it. I read an older scientific study on Sharper Image’s Ionic Breeze compared alongside other brands focusing on ozone emission & although all the models in the study emit FAR FAR higher levels of ozone than the Airdog, it still was a huge concern for me. According to the study, the further away from the air flow & if run at lower speeds, your exposure to ozone decreases & that seems to be the case anecdotally in my case. Also the third oxygen molecule will eventually dis-attach making it o2 again in a couple hours which is comforting.
The first night I tried sleeping with the machine in the bedroom on level 3 about 10 feet away from me. I woke up with a clear nose but a headache which is unusual for me. The next day I placed the machine in the hallway at level 4 & it seems so far to be a good compromise. I’m mildly stuffy, but not too much so & barely a headache. Maybe I’ll try level 3 next...
I read an article claiming that the bedroom has a lot of dust because of the bed... & that is absolutely the case. While running the Airdog on highest & making the bed like they do in hotels (lots of movement & fluffing of pillows), the number on the machine went over 200. It generally stays around 7-10. I run the machine on high & leave the room & it clears the room in about half an hour. As for the dust on the objects & tables next to the bed, they still accumulate dust, but it’s a LOT less dust than before. I guess completely eradicating dust is a pipe dream, but not constantly dusting everything 24/7 is helpful nonetheless.
Also in another accidental experiment, I turned the machine off in order to
burn some herbs to clean the air (no it wasn’t Mary Jane but no judgements) & the number on the Airdog hit 373!!!!!! Ran it on high & it cleared the smoke in the air within a half an hour or so. Hence even visually, this machine really does work:)
I would consider getting 2, but the minute amount of ozone it emits is still slightly concerning for me because generally speaking there isn’t any airflow other than a couple vents in our apartment so I just move it around like it’s actually a pet dog. If I had a baby I definitely wouldn’t put him/her right next to the machine for extended amounts of time because I’m a bit of a health nut, but I do think if used responsibly & carefully, everyone could find use for this machine in their home or office. As with medications of any sort it’s a question of risk vs. reward & for me the reward of cleaner air & less dust outweighs any risk.”
“The fan went out after about 3 or 4 years of owning my Airdog X5 which was purchased through an Indiegogo project and I was an early adopter. I contacted customer service and they took care of it at a very reasonable cost and they even replaced the display at no additional charge. I am very happy with my Airdog X5 as well as with their customer service.”
“I can appreciate living in a home with fresh smelling clean air. Not only smelling clean but knowing I have a purifier that is sanitizing the air.over the years I have bought quite a collection of useless heap filter units. Big claims with those but none have germ killing capability like the Airdog. From the time I took it out of the box and then turned it on. I could tell that very clean air was guaranteed for years to come. The X5 is well made and so easy to use. Thank Airdog....oh and if you call customer service in Ca. Be prepared to be educated on the great properties of the Airdog.”
“I have breathing problems due to asthma and COPD. My apartment is also very dusty due to the remodeling. I bought the Airdog 5 to purify my apartment. I have only had it a few weeks but it works tremendously. Glad I shopped around and got this air purifier.”
“I moved into an apartment where some of the neighbors and the former tenant are smokers. Within half an hour of plugging in this air purifier, my apartment smelled clean, and I could breathe so much more easily.
Then a plumbing issue necessitated removing some drywall in the bathroom, which caused a ton of debris from the walls to go airborne. Again, within half an hour the air was clear, and the AQI was back down into the single digits. I love this air purifier!”
