Moen 1222, Posi-Temp Pressure Balanced Shower Cartridge, Brass Reviews

4.3 Rating 426 Reviews
I'm rating this 3 stars. The product works well, and can be installed by a homeowner. The issue I have with it is the cost. You can buy a complete the complete shower head, tap and faucet for around $130CDN. This replacement cartridge is 1/2 the cost of the complete assembly. I have 2 showers that use this same cartridge. One that I replaced with an original Moen 1222 cartridge about 6 years ago. It's starting to get harder to rotate, so my guess is that I'll have to replace it soon. The one I just replaced a week ago lasted about a decade. So cost-wise it looks like we'll be replacing these every 6 to 10 years on each shower. Not sure if that's the lifespan that Moen assumes we'll get out of it??? But I'd prefer it to last longer.

Expensive but worth it. Tried a third party brand and it leaked. This slipped in MUCH easier and no leaks. Worth it.

My shower head started leaking a few weeks ago, found the replacement cartridge on plumbingsupplyandmore, it's exactly same from Moen, easy to install and stopped the leak immediately.

After accidentally buying a "compatible" cartridge because it was cheaper and wasting a couple hours because it leaked, I purchased this one instead. This one installed more easily and did not leak.Installation was super simple. The hardest part is getting the old cartridge out. For installation, I purchased extra silicone lubricant as it seems like what the give you with the cartridge isn't quite enough and could be easier to apply. What I bought was: https://www.plumbingsupplyandmore.com/gp/product/B000DZFUPC/I applied a generous amount of the silicone and just wiped up the excess that built up on the fixture after sliding in the cartridge with a paper towel.

Followed the instructions and was able to remove and install in 30 min. Did not require using my removal tool. Just used channel lock pliers with a slight 45 degree twist. No leaks.

Note that the design has changed slightly over the years and the back end of the cartridge is now larger than the older versions. Meaning, it's difficult to install and you MUST shave a little of the plastic body off before it will fully seat. Use coarse sandpaper or emery cloth to reduce the size of the end equally, all the way around but only at the very back end of the cartridge. 80 grit should work just fine.
