So with Storm Bella on its way I took the opportunity to go out walking with my new Red Backpack. The wind was blowing on the Yorkshire Wolds and rain was due so it was a good opportunity to put it under test. Here are my thoughts. These have only been on the market for about a month or so. I could find very few reviews and I was particularly interested in the shoulder strap fitment. I had a pacemaker fitted earlier in the year, this sits under the skin under your left collar bone but protrudes and typically rubs on straps. I've taken to using a Berghaus womens cut rucksack and the straps are shaped differently around the chest so avoids pushing my pacemaker against my collar bone. Ultimately I took a punt and bought the Red Backpack unseen. One of its unique features I think of the backpack is the roll top top making it waterproof and ideal across of range of sports including SUP. Given Red produce dry bags in this way, I'd trust the technology to keep the contents dry and an approach I'd not seen within the walking market. Whilst ideal for walking it can also be used for paddling biking and SUP. I was really impressed with the fit, it avoided pressure on my pacemaker, felt really light and the zig zag design of the back prevented it moving around and allowed the free flow of air to prevent sweating. I've only used this walking, but I was really surprised as to the amount of room both under the arms and around the shoulders. I cannot foresee any problems paddling or swimming in the event of a fall in. The chest strap prevents both straps from separating and I'm comfortable that it wouldn't fall off in the event of getting wet. I'd imagine that it will works really well with the Red Waist PFD and sit underneath but as I haven't got one I can't test. Ordinarily I use a Palm Hydro PFD which is probably one of the bulkier on the market and I'm not sure how well they will both work together but i'll find out when I next paddle. The insulated travel cup and drinks bottle fit in really well within the external pockets and were evenly balanced when walking when both full and empty. The backpack comes with a removable internal pouch which is padded and lined and suitable to hold a laptop 10" wide, this roughly equates to a 16" screen. Removing the pouch gives access to a discrete internal pocket suitable for keys and money. Plenty of room exists to carry enough kit for the day and should remain 100% dry. Above the external pocket on either side are two loops, I didn't quite work out what they were for but I can imagine they'd work really well with the RED Dry Pouch. I've tried attaching the Red Dry Pouch to the rear loops, this was really easy and now gives an easily accessible waterproof case. Why ? In my experience when its raining hard its advisable to open your backpack as little as possible to prevent moisture and damp getting in whilst out and about. This approach allows me really easy access to my keys and phone without the risk of getting other items in the bag damp. It may not for everyone but the beauty of RED products is that they coordinate well, even down to the Red Zip Pull. Inadvertently it also got dirty with mud and green tree sap hanging on a signpost to take a photograph for the Red Paddle Group photo competition, instructions came with it as to how to clean, sure enough both marks came off when I got home. Along with other Red products the price is probably premium compared to other rucksacks on market, but this oozes RED quality and in my view performs really well and the roll top gives reassurance that if you fall in contents will stay dry. Getting it wet and submerged will have to wait until warmer weather to test, unbelievably it didn't even rain but I can imagine it being used in conjunction with a Deck Bag or for me on my WindSup that doesn't have cargo points fitted. Would I recommend to others - Absolutely
