The Grenson Fred arrived promptly in the iconic red box and, while not accompanied by shoe/boot bag or accessories like some other middle to high end brands, they were well packaged. I had never tried on Grensons before and took a chance on an online purchase. The first thing that struck me about the Freds I got was their size. These are not the smaller typical American low profile, or Italian pointed-toe boots. The Freds resemble the Timberland construction boots I grew up with in shape and size. Even the thicker laces lend it a more rugged look. The brogue work that adorns them dresses them up and saves them from appearing too much like work boots. Slipping them on, I found them to fit very roomy, perhaps almost a half size too large. Fortunately, they are boots after all, and my merino wool boot socks saved the day. When using UK to USA size charts, I noticed that not all are in agreement with each other. I chose a half size smaller UK as I'd rather have a slightly loose fit than too tight. Last impression is that they are heavy. The extra thick stacked sole, large toe box and high profile all add weight and make the Freds feel substantial. The quality of stitching, positioning, finish, all spot on. The only modification I made is to lose the boring brown laces and swap them with electric blue. That will get them noticed. In the end, the Freds will look great with denim, Khaki, and corduroy. If you're looking for boots for slacks or to dress up an outfit a bit, you may do better with something slightly "finer" in styling, such as Allen Edmonds Daltons which feature a lower forefoot profile and narrower toe.
