“I have recently purchased the Jetboil as part of a downsizing epidemic in our car-camping kit. I realise downsizing in car-camping can seem slightly redundant, but one thing I hate about camping is having too much gear around to pack or put away, especially big clunky things which don't do the desired job properly. On a recent trip my brand name but obviously cheaply constructed camping stove was cast into the metal recycling bin due to broken and missing knobs, and a few other choice issues. I found myself considering what I needed a stove for, and what would be best to do the job. Basically when camping I no longer cook serious meals very often on gas. I make coffee and toast in the morning-that's about it. Actually several coffees. That means boiling water and heating a fry pan, both of which tasks can be accomplished with small, compact burners rather than a big stove and gas bottle. So, what's the best way to boil water fast and efficiently? After many years of camping and many different gas appliances, I have to say that giving this Jetboil unit a go is the best move I've made in that direction-ever. First thing-it works just like it says. This thing is FAST. It says just over two minutes to boil 2 cups, and it delivers on that. Next, it's very stable. The stand, gas cylinder, burner unit and pot all lock together nicely so there's no sliding around or scary likelihood of some horrible accident involving flames, boiling water, or both. It is not recommended to use these appliances inside a tent, but I have a big, airy tent and that's exactly where I use it with a high degree of confidence, due to it's stable nature and well protected flame. Seriously, would never leave it unattended though. The Jetboil is very compact. If you use the small Jetboil canister, the whole kit fits inside the pot. There is a sewn on loop to the pot cover, through which I use a carabiner to hang the thing in the tent where it's always handy. It sets up in a minute or so, meaning you can click it all together, boil the water, and be pouring coffee or tea in less than four minutes. It also cools down very rapidly once used, so you can pack it away soon after use if you empty any remaining hot water out. Best thing of all, once you have rapidly boiled your water, you can pick up the container in your bare hand, and pour out in perfect comfort, thanks to the neoprene cover. The pouring hole in the soft touch lid is nice and precise too. I use an Aeropress to make coffee, which requires a fairly accurate pour, and the Jetboil nails it, much better than the old billy held in a tea towel or the end of my hoodie sleeve. As far as boiling water for drinks, noodles, or whatever, this is the best item for the job I have seen away from the fancy pants kitchen kettle you might have at home. While this might cost the same as the kitchen kettle, it does just as good a job, and if you attach the same importance I do to that timely cup of quality joe first thing in the morning, it's well worth it. When you've outlayed a bit of money on something, it's nice for that something to perform as well at it's supposed to, and for it also to feel solid, well constructed, and worth the outlay. That's actually pretty rare, but the Jetboil actually delivers on the promise. Everything feels well designed, well built, and lasting quality. I should point out I have not used this unit for cooking food, and don't intent to bother. That said, it produces a concentrated and intense little flame, so I'm pretty sure it would do quite well as a small cooker for simple tasks if required. If you're looking to cook big meals there are obviously better tools for the job, however I love this thing so much even if I was still carrying a three burner stove I'd like to have this along to pull out for coffee and tea-it's lighter, faster, far more convenient. If forced to come up with a few negatives, I will struggle. The heat indicator on the side of the pot, which goes yellow as the water heats, is sort of gimmicky. Sort of. It turns fully yellow well before the water boils, so not really helpful there. However it does kind of assist if you're keeping an eye from across the room, and it does serve as a reminder and warning to anyone else around that the thing is hot. The Carbon model boils water for two. If you have a large family to serve, maybe look elsewhere, possibly the larger model. However if you find yourself looking for a fast, convenient, fairly light and compact, user friendly way to make 500 to 700ml of boiling water, you'd be hard pressed for a better solution.”
