The Sound of Silence I have upgrade my music system over 3 decades and am fortunate living in London that I get to see live music at Ronnie Scott’s, The Jazz Cafe and The Barbican as a few venues, half the time the sound engineer has cloth ears and the drums drown out the rest of the band. I’ve got my system in my room sounding musical to me, which is coherent, from the lowest bass notes to the highest cymbal splash. I have mild room treatment with bass traps, so seldom over excite my room. My go to test track is Ricky’s Theme by The Beastie Boys on the In Sound from Way Out, which is instrumental jazz undermined with a driving acoustic bass. With the Shunyata Altaira plugged into my Shunyata Everest power conditioner I hear more MUSIC. A repeatable phenomenon whenever I reduce noise is that I have to turn up the volume as with a layer of noise removed the system overall is quieter, However, what I have gained as an increase in soundstage depth, separation of stereo image and new micro dynamics, especially in percussion. The low end has gained an increase in definition with drums and double bass having an increased realism and harmonics, which is critical for me as bass underpins music. With Ricky’s Theme I can clearly hear the symbol work and percussion, all underpinned by the droning double bass in 3d space. If you have your system sorted and want to hear it at its best, then the Shunyata Altaira will give it the final polish.
