The amplifiers came in very well constructed, sealed, thick cardboard boxes with shaped packing blocks. They arrived only a few days after the order was put in, with no evidence of being dropped or mistreated. I cannot fault the lancaster grey finish, which has no marks or blemishes. What I noticed immediately was that the bass was very sure-footed and controlled, even though the amplifiers have a claimed damping factor of only 16. This ability was apparent to me within the first few minutes of listening. Let alone having a warm-up or running-in period. The extreme low frequencies are not ducked in any way at the level I was listening giving the possible illusion of a very powerful set of amplifiers. The high end on some transistor amplifiers can sometimes sound forced, especially when played loud where as with the Quads it seems smooth and effortless. The sibilants sound really natural without this forced effect, adding to the overall fidelity of the sound. Listening with the preamplifier off, close to the speaker, I could not to hear any hum or noise coming from the speaker on either channel. I was listening with the following equipment: Prosound L65AA CD player or Rega RP6/Exact/RB303, QC24P, QC24, IMF MDT speakers. The only change made in this comparison of the systems was to the power amplifiers. All the same leads were used, including the speaker leads and their terminations. The differences noted were against several good and respected valve and transistor amplifiers. The sound from the Quads is very life-like, balanced and almost subdued but definitely not tiring in-your-face like some others. I am very pleased with the change these have made to my hi-fi system. The music was Pink Floyd, Yes, Tangerine Dream, Alan Parsons, Nirvana, Camel, Jethro Tull, Ozric Tentacles, Sam Fender, Genesis, Coldplay, Biffy Clyro, Lady Gaga and a few other less known artists.
