The Acoustic Energy AE500s were bought to replace a pair of Q Acoustic Concept 20’s being fed by a Bluesound Node X streaming Tidal and a Rega Elex-R. I wanted a clearer, more airy top end with detailed mids and deeper, controlled bass. I don’t like harsh treble or soggy bass. Challenging acoustics in my narrow room means that matching speakers to the room is paramount and I have always struggled to find anything that works without too many compromises. I have tried various £500 - £1200 models from Q Acoustic, Dynaudio, and ATC but none gave me what I was looking for. A demo of some AE300.2s on a Rega Elex Mk4 at The Audiobarn went really well but as I am looking to upgrade my amp soon they suggested trying the AE500. I am glad they did because the notable increase in performance more than justified the extra cost. Setting the AE500s up on my Q Acoustic 24” stands confirmed that they are giving me everything I was looking for, especially with the bass. They go way deeper than the Concept 20s but the carbon drivers and slotted port means that the bass is fast and controlled. Vocals really stand out and the highs are detailed and open without ever sounding harsh. The next step for me is an amp upgrade and the demo proved that an Elex Mk4 will be a good place to start but I’m sure the AE500 is more than capable of making the most of even better amplifiers.
