The Handy Hollow Tine Aerator Reviews

Read The Green Reaper Reviews

This hollow tine aerator from Handy is a very simple device featuring a series of spring loaded hollow tines which are pushed through the surface of the lawn to remove a small plug of soil. Using the Handy hollow tine aerator will improve drainage and allow moisture and nutrients to penetrate to promote growth and help the grass root system of the plants to flourish. The plugs which are removed are deposited in a tray. The handles fold down so the aerator takes up less space in your shed and can be easily transported in the boot of a car.

Very disappointing. Although it is well made, sturdy and well finished, it doesn't actually work. The hollow tines are quite large, but get clogged with soil which stays in the tines and is not ejected. So it is just like a large fork, and therefore hard to push into the ground. Maybe it would be better with a more sandy soil?

The aerator is disappointing in that whereas I expected the springs to ram the tines into the soil they simply serve to help pull the tines out of the soil, which is easy enough anyway. Furthermore the springs fight against the tines being pushed right down into the soil. For this reason I am in the process of modifying the aerator to remove the springs. An elegant approach to this is to remove the nuts with the springs welded on and using ordinary nuts instead. The hollow tines could also do with being sharper by tapering the ends more. It is annoying to need to modify the tool but I have not found anything any better.
