“The bike has a reasonable sized engine for general use and touring, it has low weight distribution and easily adjusted rear suspension for travelling two up or with luggage. The side boxes and top box can be fitted and removed in seconds using the ignition key. I have the extra low seat as I have short legs but you can fit a standard or higher height seat again in seconds using the ignition key. The screen could be a little higher to give better wind protection. There seems to be a lack of BMW accessories available, ie, higher screen, crash protection for fairing and side boxes, handlebar risers and foot peg adjusters. If they were available this bike could be set up to cover all needs for people who like the 800cc bike.”
“I'm 6'2", the bike came with bar risers and a low seat. Low seat isn't a problem although I'll probably get a comfort seat eventually. The standard screen puts the airflow directly in my face, and there is no adjustment. The mudguards don't, so on a damp day the bike is a dirt magnet. The rear wheel throws crap everywhere. It needs a fender extender up front and a rear hugger. The fairing offers very little weather protection. The fuel capacity is poor - about 200mls if you are on reserve and lucky. The turning circle is rubbish. It doesn't like low revs.
All that said it's a nice bike to ride, fairly good along country lanes. The lack of weather protection has slowed me down, maybe not a bad thing. I'll keep it for a while and see what I Think after a year or so.”
“I am a tourer UK/Europe and have had a range of bikes from G/Wings to Pan/Euro's (my last 2 bikes). Now at 73 I find I need a lighter bike to make it easier to push and pull about on wet grass and mud as in the I.O.M. The BMW F800GT fills the bill very well, I first had the F800ST but found this was a bit of a "sportier" bike with more of a lean forward kind of position. the 800GT is more of an upright position to suit my type of tour riding. I would like to see BMW engineers when they design the bikes look to riders fitting extras, as in the 800GT, the brake and electric cables are so tight on the handle bars that the handle bars can not be fitted with a spacer to rake them back a bit which would suit me even more. There seems to be a lot more equipment variations over in Germany suited to BMW than there are over here in the UK with modifications being sanctioned by BMW, here in UK any sort of mod is frowned on as in my after market big screen (from Germany), Never mind we will prevail and I still like the F800GT. “Superb machine a lot ligter than RT. and does everything with ease.
Shame about the Crap after sales Sevice . Took it for first service, treated worse than Carnell or back street garage.”
“I have the suspension adjustment on the handlebars. Be aware that when riding in comfort mode the bike does not accelerate as normal as the suspension is linked to the management system.
Fantastic touring with wife on back with a return of 74mpg, provided it is not motorway travelling.”
