When I renew it will be another RT. Every ride is a delight, excellent for both pillion and rider, superb handling, and great in all 4 seasons, rain or shine.

This 2010 R1200RT is a bit of a conundrum. It is better than most but not as good as it should be for the money. At the root of this is BMW's inability to manufacture the number of machines required to satisfy the market while maintaining the highest quality. If you read the forums you will be amazed at the discussions which they contain. From a personal perspective I have had issues with the wiring loom, the switchgear and the fuel measuring gauge. While these faults may seem minor, because they are due to design defects and could easily have been avoided, then buyers get frustrated. A few pence saved by the manufacturer must have cost them dearly in warranty repairs and lost credibility. Other models have gear change issues and centre stand operating problems so it is not just a one off. However at the end of the day it is a very sophisticated machine and like BMW cars there are many options to pick when buying new. Would I buy another? Probably, Yes.

Love the bike, but not sure the boxer engine is really for me, I wish I had gone for the K1300 GT instead as I really miss the 4 cylinder smoothness, I am considering part exing the RT for the K1300 GT, but am very diissapointed and really concerned about the Motorrad switchgear quality.

It does everything it said on the tin so to speak .I love it but at 66 and my health not so good will have to part with it because it's heavy to push and hold up at light on hills etc but when underway fantastic road manners and excelleration for a big bike mpg at about 50 plus on rides one or two up and fully laden makes no difference .All in all a well thought out bike .

The BMW R1200RT is the consummate touring machine with surprisingly good handling. You would expect a full dress tourer to handle like an oil tanker but the RT is remarkably nimble and can be hustled along twisty B roads putting a grin on your face in the process. The engine is no super smooth powerplant but once you learn to ride the torque curve it is easy to ride and is well capable of speeds in banning territory. The bike has a nice sweet spot at around 90mph in top gear for Autobahn cruising and can cover long distances with ease. High revs are unpleasant with a really noticeable vibration above 6000 rpm. It is much better to use the engine torque and stay below the red line! The fairing keeps most of the weather off and the electrically adjustable screen can be set to just the right point to create a bubble of calm. The mirrors could be better but you do get accustomed to the view though taller riders (over 6' 2" ) might find them next to useless. The stock seats could use some improvement as they tend to become a pain in the backside at around the 150 mile mark. Reliability has been good with no breakdowns or failures and real world fuel consumption is around 52mpg, mostly two up. Oil consumption is negligible but the bike has 18,000 miles on the clock and is well run in. Tyre wear is good with a rear good for 8000 miles but by then the rear tyre has squared off and the front has a flat edge on one side. Overall the RT has a lot going for it and is a good all round machine capable of more than just touring The bike reviewed is a 2010 cam head R1200 RT.
