I use API Ammonia Test Kit which turns green when any ammonia+Ammonium person this is referred to as TAN Total Ammonium Nitrates the basis of the test kit is the salicylate test. I also have a meter which uses Nesler method again measuring TAN.
The Seachem kit is based on their continuous ammonia alert this measures NH3 only. 2 test dots are placed in a well containing tank water 1 has ammonia reagent added this then measures TAN by shifting to Ph 14 I expect where all the NH3& NH4+ converts to NH3 the other ammonia. Levels of Ammonia over 0.02mg/dl cause fishes problems.
This kit gives you peace of mind when you TAN reads high. I have Zeolite in the filter which absorbs ammonia until the equilibrium point then acts as a buffer for Ammonia I figured that out after water changes didn't drop the TAN much now I can measure the ammonia direct.”
