Tech Note 2: Make Hard Job EasySuccessfully installing an inner seal without the correct Seal Installer is usually a good exercise in increasing your blood pressure. Makeshift methods don't usually get the job done due to the restricted area you need to work in, and the amount of compression needed to be applied to the seal. Due to the way we have to make the tool to function, your Seal Installer and Seal MUST match. QT1029 will only work with original equipment design, NOK manufactured seals such as our QU40159 (Dodge p/n 4116366). Seals manufactured by other seal manufacturers WILL NOT WORK WITH THIS INSTALLER!!!! If you have the green, CR manufactured QU40270 seal, use our QT1084 Installer. We do not manufacture installers for this application to fit any other competitive seal designs such as National or NAK.
Tech Note 3: Installer TypesWe make two types of Seal Installers for 1994-1999 Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 4x4s with Dana 60 Front Axles: Adjustable Depth and Fixed Depth. The Installer on this page is an Adjustable Depth Installer that allows you to offset the seal to a deeper depth to miss a groove or other damage on the axle shaft. This Installer will work on both 1989 to 2001 Dana 44 and 1994 to 1999 Dana 60 axles. However, YOU MUST be careful you do not set the seal TOO DEEP which may place the seal beyond the axle shaft seal surface! Our Fixed Depth Seal Installer QT1136 will firmly stop at a preset depth. Fixed Depth Installers will only fit Dana 60 axles in 1994 to 1999 Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 4x4s. Choose our Adjustable Depth Seal Installer for installing seals in any 1989-2001 Dodge with a Model 44, or if you want the flexibility to offset the seals on 1994 to 1999 3/4 ton and 1 tons with the Dana 60. Choose our Fixed Depth Installers if you want quick, fool-proof seal installation on 1994 to 1999 Dana 60 equipped Ram 2500 and Ram 3500.
Tech Note 4: Axle DisassembleFor all applications, the wheel hubs, axle shafts, and differential MUST be removed from the axle housing to replace QU40159 inner axle oil seal(s) which are located next to the differential.
Tech Note 5: Also CheckWhen replacing your inner axle seals, ALWAYS inspect your Ball Joints, Axle Universal Joints, Differential Bearings, and Wheel Bearings/Hubs (also Spindle Bearings/Seals on 1970-1993) for wear or damage. The extra time needed to replace these components is minimal since you already have the axle apart to do the axle seals.
Tech Note 6: Seal RemoversOnce the axle is disassembled, the old seals can be easily removed with our QK4647 (1977-1988 without CAD) or TS1184 (1988-2001 with CAD) Seal Remover Tool Sets or other suitable tools such as a length of sturdy pipe that will fit inside the axle tube. You will also need to clean the inside of the axle tube to remove dirt and crud that could get pushed into your new seal during reassembly.
Tech Note 7: Dodge Ram 1994-1999 For the 1994-1999 model years, Dodge Ram 1500, Ram 2500 Dana 44 and Ram 2500, Ram 3500 Dana 60 front axles with vacuum controlled Central Axle Disconnect (CAD) use the exact same inner axle shaft seals and seal installation tools. QT1029 will work for the left seal on both Dodge Dana 44 and Dana 60 axles for these years.
