Tech Note 1: IncludesQK1109 includes the 3 pins used on the NV4500 main case 5th gear shift rail. NV4500 transmissions also use 7 identical rolled steel pins in the shift cover to retain the shift forks and lugs. Two each for the 1-2 and 3-4 shift forks, plus one each in the reverse fork, 3-4 shift lug, and 1-2 shift lug all of which are included in available QK1108 Kit. Tech Note 2: Shift Rail LocationsThe New Venture NV4500 transmission has four shift rails, three of those, including the 5th-Reverse Rail are in the top cover. The fourth rail which is for 5th gear, is located partly in the transmission case, and it is controlled indirectly by the reverse shift fork through a connecting arm or lug. Tech Note 3: Removal/InstallationTo replace the NV4500 5th Gear Shift lug roll pin, the transmission should be out of the truck with the top cover and rear housing removed. You will need a long reach punch like QT9300 8" Punch to remove the roll pin from QU10736 5th Gear Lug. I recommend you refer to my fully illustrated, step-by-step, TM1003 NV4500 Shop Manual for service procedures. The two mushroom head pins that retain the 5th gear fork can be accessed when the rear housing is removed from the transmission. To remove, drive the pins upward. Tech Note 4: Lubricants, Sealants, ThreadlockersEarly production NV4500 Transmissions used an anaerobic sealant (QU90003) to seal between the main case and input bearing retainer, top cover, and rear housing. Mid-production units used anaerobic sealant just on the input retainer and RTV for everything else. Later production transmissions used black RTV Sealant (QU90006 or QU90005) for everything. Either type of sealant works fine (except the PTO covers ALWAYS should be sealed with RTV), but I prefer RTV for all components. Regardless of which sealant you use, make sure excess sealant does not block the lube access hole at the top of input retainer pilot that fits into the transmission case! Also, the threaded holes in the main case for the four retainer bolts and 12 PTO bolts are open ended, so you must use new bolts with factory applied threadlocker or apply Threadlocker (S24200) to your existing bolts to prevent oil seepage past the bolt threads. See my TM1003 NV4500 Shop Manual or VSG1003DVD NV4500 Overhaul Video for more information.
