Tech Note 1: Unitized SealQU40055 is a unitized seal that combines the seal and axle shaft guide into one part. It is an exact replacement part for the seal GM used in most 1977-1991 GM 10 Bolt front axles and many 1967 to 1978 Dana 44 axles. It is also the replacement part for a number of 1957 to 1972 Dana 44 axles that had QU42015 seal and a separate sheet metal guide.
Tech Note 2: Removal RequiredLike almost all solid beam axle shaft seals, QU40055 Seals are pressed in the inboard ends of the axle tubes next to the differential. It is impossible to replace the seals from the outside! You must remove the hubs, axle shafts, and differential to replace these seals.
Tech Note 3: PrepOnce the axle is disassembled, the old seals can be easily removed with our QK4647 Seal Remover Tool Sets or other suitable tool such as a length of sturdy pipe that will fit inside the axle tube. You will also need to clean the inside of the axle tube to remove dirt and crud that could get pushed into your new seal during reassembly.
Tech Note 4: Recommended Install ToolsInstalling Inner Axle Seal without damaging them can be quite difficult without special installation tools. We make two installers for QU40055 Seal. QT1041 is a Dana 44 specific Installer that installs your new seals to the precise factory location. QT1165 is an adjustable depth Installer which works on both Dana 44 and GM 10 Bolt. Both Installers are designed to be used with a Press Screw and Thrust Plate. Dana 44 Axles need QT1189 Press Screw and QT1161 Thrust Plate. GM 10 Bolt Axles use QTA1133 Press Screw and QT1186 Thrust Plate.
Tech Note 5: LubeAfter the seals are installed, be sure to grease the lips to provide initial lubrication for the seal lip. Neglecting this step will usually cause the seal to fail the first time you use 4x4 mode. Do NOT grease the axle shafts as the grease will pick up crud as they are slid into the axle housing.
