Clunk Chain NPG-NVG-MPT Lubricants Matching Parts Applications
Tech Note 1: Teeth WearDodge does not offer a lockout hub option on 2003 and newer Dodge Ram 2500, Ram 3500, Ram 4500, and Ram 5500 4x4 trucks, so even in 4x2 mode, the front axle shafts, differential, front driveshaft, transfer case front output shaft and the transfer case chain/sprockets are always rotating when you drive even though they are not under power. Besides sucking a bit of power and fuel, all these rotating components are subject to wear. On both Dodge and Ford makes you should replace the chain when doing major transfer case service, plus you should inspect the sprockets for wear on the teeth. If you can feel teeth wear with your fingernail, REPLACE BOTH the SPROCKETS and CHAIN!
Tech Note 2: ClunkContrary to popular belief, the Drive Chain can not cause a clunk or contribute to "slack" in the drive train in 4x2 mode. The chain is only under power in 4x4 mode.
Tech Note 3: ChainIn addition to having the correct length, width, and link height, a replacement transfer case drive chain must have the same type of link pins as the original equipment chain. Why? Because transfer case sprocket teeth are machined with specific features and angles that match a specific link and pin type. Our QU50255 chains exactly match the original equipment specifications because they ARE original equipment chains.
Tech Note 4: NPG-NVG-MPTWhen Ford (1999 models) and Dodge (2003 models) first used NV271 and NV273 transfer cases, New Process Gear (NPG) of East Syracuse N.Y was part of New Venture Gear (NVG). When NVG dissolved, NPG continued on under Chrysler. Chrysler subsequently sold the production rights to Magna, a Canadian automotive parts company. All these name changes are confusing, but the important thing to know is a specific assembly number for any 271F, 271D, 273D, and 273F transfer case is the same and uses the same replacement parts regardless if it was built by New Venture, New Process, or Magna.
