Tech Note 1: Safety Warning! Do Not Reuse Stock NutsDan the Gear Man Safety Warning: Stock Elastic Stop Spindle Nuts and Lock Wedges used on 1994-2002 Dodge Ram Dana 60, Dana 70, and 80 rear axles are designed to be installed once and only once! For safety reasons, you must discard both the nut and wedge if they are removed from the spindle for any reason. Both parts lose a percentage of their resistance of coming off when they are removed. You may hear of cases where this type of factory nut has come off while the truck was being driven. Invariably, these failures involve nuts and wedges that have been reused or improperly installed. NEVER REUSE FACTORY ELASTIC STOP SPINDLE NUTS and LOCK WEDGES!!!!! Tech Note 2: Safety Warning! Do Not Reuse Spindle Nut Lock WashersCustomer Statement: "Nonreusable? Dan what are you talking about? I always reuse them until all the tabs break off!" Well guys, for safety reasons, these lock washers must be discarded after every use. That means any time you bend up a tab to readjust or remove the spindle nuts. Why? Metal fatigue. The lock tabs lose some of their strength after they are straightened out. Also, the inside tab that fits in the spindle keyway has a tendency to shear when the outer nut is tightened against it more than one time. Reusing a bend over tab lockwasher may save you a few dollars, but by doing so you might kill yourself and others when you lose a hub and wheel going 75 mph down the Interstate. Tech Note 3: Wheel Bearing LubricationUnder operating conditions, the rear wheel bearings are bathed in oil from the differential, but they do need to be pre-lubricated to provide initial lubrication.
