Installation Force Applications
Tech Note 1: Model 70 Axles
Dana Spicer Model 70 axles were built to take either differential bearings with 3-13/16" diameter bearing cups or 4-1/8" cups. If you have a 70HD, you have the larger cups and you need QT1159 Bearing Installer. QT1158 fits most standard Model 70 rear axles in single rear wheel trucks built since the late 1970's which will usually have the 3-13/16" bearing cup as will Dodge dual rear wheel axles built from the mid 1980's to 2002. Almost all Model 70 front axles also use the 3-13/16" smaller bearing cup.
Tech Note 2: Installation Force Over the years, I have seen a lot of diff bearings installed with makeshift methods that failed prematurely. The soft cage and both the hardened rollers and races are easily damaged from rough handling. Bearings are kind of like eggs, they can take tremendous pressures in certain directions, but are easily wrecked by applying impact force in the wrong place. The big difference is a bearing that fails can cause an accident that injures or kills you, while crushing an egg just means you get some shell bits in your omelet! With the QT1158, your installation force is applied entirely to the inner race face, thereby preventing you from harming the cage, races, or rollers.

Great tool! Effectively does exactly what they say. I drove my carrier bearings on as directed, expecting to see some minor marks without completely damaging bearing rollers or tapered cages. I was surprised that I couldn’t even find marks in the contact areas where they’re supposed to contact.
