“An American citizern of Hebridean descent -- my Cape Breton Island grandfather was a native speaker of Scottish Gaelic, a language with which I became conversant while working on my Edinburgh PhD, but I became good friends during the same period with Professor Pádraig Ó Macháin, my contemporary as an Edinburgh PhD student at the time, himself in the Celtic Dept. While he was with DIAS in Dublin, I was occasionally a guest in his home, with his wife and children, while I did research at TCD. This T-shirt reminds me of happy times.”
