Just got the speakers. Very well packaged and shipped, and the bonus CD is a really interesting mix, revealing what these speakers can do. First impressions: Sounds quite nice off the box, and I really look forward to breaking it in. The aesthetics are reasonable. I noticed the vinyl seam at the bottom and felt that it was below par for something with a "reference" moniker. Moreover, these speakers did not even include any kind of insulation feet. Luckily, I do have some around the house. The wife however loved the looks, and remarked that the tweed in the front makes it look like a distinguished gent. Given that the speakers have passed the most important aesthetic test, I have no complaints, whatsoever. ;) A big shout out to Sean Smollon for carefully listening to my needs, and for his expertise and sage advise. He was right on the money, and I have had yet another terrific experience with Upscale.

These bookshelf speakers are great. Sounds are natural ,bass is well rounded. Highs are perfectly balanced. I have them hooked to a ps audio sprout. Love them together.

Having recently moved, I was looking for a high-performing bookshelf speaker that would not break the bank and still sound great with my gear and musical tastes. My listening room is considerably smaller than my prior one, and I wanted a speaker that was neutral and revealing, detailed, but also had great bass/midbass. After watching Kevin's review and reading a bunch about this speaker, I decided to give them a try. I trust Kevin and Upscale Audio completely when it comes to carrying and recommending quality gear at all price points. I am running them with a Sonic Frontiers SFS 80 tube amp and an Audio Research tube preamp. I mostly listen to classic and modern rock, but I have a pretty eclectic taste when it comes to what sounds good on my system. So my initial impressions of the speaker are excellent on a bunch of levels. Overall, they just look great. The white glossy front and the configuration of the drivers looks well beyond their price point. Honestly, I have yet to see a cooler, better looking grille on a speaker in any price point. They are a grey tweed and attach to the speaker using magnets. No more holes to look at on your speakers when listening with the grilles removed! The vinyl wrap on the cabinet is done well and is certainly nicer than a black ash particle board found on other speakers sub the $1k price. My only complaint is that there is only one set of binding posts on the back, however I do understand the cost savings here and I don't think that you are missing much without bi-amp or bi-wiring this speaker. It is clear that Andrew Jones put the money in the speaker where it mattered most. As far as sound, they continue to impress me as the days and break in period progress. Overall, the presentation makes the speaker disappear and you have a wide and clear soundstage. Midrange is forward without being overbearing and vocals sound wonderful. It is easy to hear background and harmonizing vocals at even low volumes. The Debut Reference is not a bright speaker and the top end is detailed and crisp without being fatiguing. If you are not a fan of a laid back top end, this speaker may not give you that trebble that some others do, but they are undeniably accurate and musical. I am a fan of bass and love to feel the music so I was concerned regarding performance with only a 6.5 inch driver. Fear not! I was amazed and impressed at how low and authoritatively they play without being boomy. These do take some power to run and I noticed that at medium to higher volumes they tend to open up a bit without being overpowering. Ultimately, I choose to pair these with a REL T5i sub which I also purchased from Upscale, and I could not be happier! I would challenge you to find another $600 pair of speakers that have the ELAC Debut Reference's sonic qualities!
