“These waves were replacements for Shuaguang CV181-2. From the moment they were inserted into my headphone ap, the improvement in sound was palpable. Although dating from the sixties, the sound is clear and modern. The first thing noticeable, even at high levels through headphones is the quiet and dark background. No hiss, no burbles, no whistles, just lovely, deep darkness which continues with music playing. It is akin to watching a video display with great low black level. Bass is tough and true. nothing flabby and overladen with harmonic distortion, just true bass, easily heard n the plucked strings of Spanish Harlem (Rebecca Pigeon). Lovely liquid mids, with snap and sparkle. Highs are extended but fluid. Nothing harsh to intrude, but nothing seemingly lost. Lastly, on older recordings tape hiss isn't missing but neither is it over emphasised or intrusive. In all a lovely valve. Packaging was also fun; original from the 60s. The only note of discord is that my electrically matched pair were not physically matched!”
