“This replaces a very nice and well-reviewed phono stage, and I was primarily looking for greater depth and dimensionality in the soundstage. The Little Loco absolutely delivers that, but what surprised me were the additional improvements across the board. The noise floor is noticeably lower, and the sense of the recording space becomes much more apparent, which has been a major enhancement to the listening experience. It does all the “audiophile” things you’d hope for, but more importantly, it’s simply musical. I know this sounds cliché, but the Little Loco really does move beyond typical audiophile descriptors and just presents music naturally, rather than emphasizing a stereotypical tube or solid-state character. That took a little adjustment at first, but in a very good way. Regarding gain, I left it on the medium setting and found it roughly equivalent to my previous phono stage running at +60dB with the additional 6dB balanced boost. I initially paid a lot of attention to this, but quickly stopped thinking about it because the unit just works seamlessly in the system. Dynamics are terrific as well. The only real limitation is cartridge compatibility, but it seems that most low-output MC cartridges should pair very well with it. I’m currently using a Hana ML with excellent results.
