“In terms of sound quality and musicality, the Lumin S1 is a magical piece of gear. In my house, I have it connected (through what I call an intranet system) to my music composition computer in another room. I also have the S1 connected to outside world through the internet. From the music composition computer I can pull up and play recordings through the Lumin. But I also have subscriptions to Tidal and Spotify and TuneIn, and between these three sources I can listen to just about any music I want, anytime I want, including quality internet music stations across the globe. (I love Swiss Classic Radio and Minnesota Public Radio's The Choral Stream, among a dozen other wonderful music sources.) The Lumin S1 is extremely handy if you are a person with a never-ending curiosity about music in its many genres, and a thirst and need to listen to that music as accurately (and beautifully) as possible. Sound quality: Essentially perfect. If the recording is great, the Lumin will play it that way. The S1 is essentially without flaw in terms of sound reproduction quality. It is stunning. One quibble: Perhaps because I am not of the generation of people who think cell phones are fifth limbs, and because I am not of the generation of people who think computers are wonderful things we should all adore and fawn over rather than look people in the eye and speak with them as people used to do, but I find the operating instructions on the Lumin to be significantly lacking. I have had my Lumin S1 for about five weeks now. While I can play single tracks from Tidal through it, I have yet to be able to create a playlist that will play an entire album or several hours worth of music. I have to play one track at a time on Tidal. I don't mind this if I am sitting in my listening chair in my listening room. I do mind if I am living as a human being, moving around and doing things in my home instead of existing as a music chair listening troll. Lumin needs to improve its operating instructions. The S1 is an expensive piece of gear. The operating instructions should match its price. But in terms of sound quality and performance? Gorgeous. Without flaw. Physical appearance? Gorgeous. Stunning. Looks wonderful tied into my BAT preamp/amp system. And it is absolutely silent except in the art of producing music. I give the Lumin S1 four stars for performance and musicality. I give the Lumin S1 only two stars for the quality and depth of its operating instructions. Would I purchase it again? Of course I would. It is an exquisite piece of gear. It plays recordings accurately, without flaw.”
