For $4K whatever turntable you get should sound great. But most of them from a few feet away are indistinguishable from each other or most other $1K turntables for that matter. A VPI Prime Scout is very different. It looks like the serious turntable it is. It's 20 Lb platter and 20 Lb plinth are clearly in opposition to the lightweight design of some. Competition. But the best part is the tonearm and base. At 10.5" it can handle Microline and Shibata styli without the inner groove problems inherent in shorter arms. Its unipivot bearing my look wobbly, but in practice it is solid, and lower friction than other designs. When the adjustable height base is included, this is a seriously competent arm. Bottom line is while $4K certainly isn't inexpensive, the Prime Scout is a bargain for the caliber of device you get, and it looks it. Very Highly recommended.

Very nice. Completely happy with this TT. The sound is more pronounced and punchy than the old TT.
