I've tried a variety of 12AT7 tubes, and the Sylvania Gold Brand was my clear favorite. It gives solid-state-ilke speed and definition with enough tube-like bloom to be warm and beautiful. For overall greatness, only the Telefunken ECC801S came close. It was too dark for everyday listening, but just the thing for relaxing listening in the evening.

I I had Tesla/JJ, Mullard CV4024, Mullard 62001. Of thw 12AT7 tubes I have tried in my VTL mono-blocks. The Sylvania 6201is my favorite. The Mullards are more lush and full, and do render the human voice better. These are very fast and accurate and edge out the Mullards only in conveying inner detail. I recommend these to any one who prefers his/her sonics to be detailed and neutral. I recommend the Mullards to any one who wants to put real flesh put on vocal performances.

I'm constantly on the lookout for something outside of the normal "tone-box" for the musicians' amps' Phase Inverters I maintain. These wonderful tubes are more known throughout the HiFi world, but they they can also "Lift the Veil" on an overly-dark guitar amp, if they call for a 12AT7 in the PI. To my ears, it seems to fill in the upper mids in a normal "mid-scooped" Fender, somewhat like the old Blackburn Mullards do, but different. (not a CV4024). A nice surprise! I also ordered a pair of Sylvania Gold Brand 6201 for use in my phono section (Allen Wright designed Tara Labs Passage). I think I like this tube even better than the Mullard 6201s. I loaned my Mullards out for a few weeks, and I'll know for sure when I do the next replacement. The Sylvania have almost all of the warmth and musicality of the Mullards with a little cleaner (especially on the bottom) presentation. Fabulous tube.
