“I'd agree with anyone who says these speakers are great for the price, so I give them four stars. I don't think they are "giant killers" that beat out my current B&W bookshelf speakers, which were twice the cost purchased new 8 years ago. The Lintons play great, with enjoyable dynamics, at background listening levels, which is not something every speaker does well. At medium and high levels they hold it together pretty well. Their overall tone is good. Nothing sounds egregiously wrong or out of balance. I didn't keep them for a few reasons. The Lintons treble was a little bit grainy (as opposed to smooth). Some sibilance in "S" sounds in some songs. Other aspects of treble sound just didn't sound entirely realistic to me. A few times when watching movies we had trouble understanding dialog in movies or TV. This, for me, is an immediate sign that I'm not going to be able to live with a speaker. We listen in a 2.0 channel system, even for movies. Finally, we just didn't find them involving. They didn't pull us into us into our favorite songs the way we are used to. When we turned them up, and a song reached a crescendo we knew was there, like the performer kinda gave up and put in a perfunctory performance on that day. This was true for literally anything we tried: pop, jazz, rap, Hamilton (the play), etc. After a few weeks I had no experience of feeling "pulled in" by the music with these speakers. Could it be that they are too relaxed for us? Could it be that we didn't let them break in long enough? Poor electronics feeding the speaker? I can't answer. I was feeding them with a NAD C390DD which I've used for 8 years to feed a B&W PM1 bookshelf speaker. This is a $6K system, and it is probably unfair to expect the Linton to best the PM1 at what it does best. Instead, I wanted the Linton to better the PM1 at what it does worst, and be good enough at everything else. The PM1s fall asleep and lose dynamics when played at low volumes, and the Lintons do much better at this. The PM1s start to break apart when pushed loud in the larger living room in our new place. They're just too small for the space. The Lintons do better at this too. The could play loud without making me feel like they'd reached their limit and begun to distort or play noticeably compressed. But the Lintons succeeded at these things while sacrificing what the PM1s do very well: sweet treble, excellent midrange clarity (and tv/movie dialog), and a compelling coherence and punch in that songs that make you want to dance (at least when not pushed too loud). I do think they're great for the money. If $1500 was the top of my budget I'd most likely stop here. Most of these differences stop mattering as much if you decide to stop analyzing sound and enjoy life instead. I'm fortunate enough to have a higher budget, so I think I can find a speaker that is better than both the Wharfedale Lintons and the B&W PM1, for my space and my preferences. One thing I'm sure of: when I find them, they are going to cost more than the Lintons!”

“Heavy, handsome, essential for the Linton 85s. Looking at them, I can’t tell what makes them 40 lbs, but they provide a substantial anchor for the equally elegant speakers.”

“The perfect stereo speakers. They exhibit precise imaging and are transparent with a very wide soundstage that extends beyond the cabinets. They are very tonally balanced. They are not bright and shrill nor are they overly warm to the point of being dull. They have good dynamics. They seem to be perfectly balanced speakers that accomplish everything you wish a stereo speaker to accomplish. Furthermore, these are the most beautiful speakers I have ever owned. The matching real wood veneer accompanied with the speakers’ matching stands exhibits excellent craftsmanship. These speakers will definitely remain connected in my system for time to come. I won’t be purchasing a new pair of stereo speakers for a long time, if ever.”
