How good can a Project Carbon Evo sound? What’s the ceiling of performance for this relatively modest turntable? These were questions that I had. Over the past couple of years I had made just about every possible upgrade Project offers for the Carbon Evo. The aluminum sub platter made the most noticeable improvement by the way. I considered the Ortofon 2M Bronze for my final upgrade but was never completely content with the sound of the 2M Blue. The 2M Blue was very good at times but often induced some listening fatigue from what sounded like a slightly boosted upper midrange. After reading some positive reviews of the Sumiko Wellfleet cartridge, I called Upscale Audio and spoke to one of crew members. They were very helpful by answering all my questions which gave me the confidence to invest in the Wellfleet. An easy install using a two point cartridge alignment protractor, set the tracking force to 2 grams and done. No azimuth adjustment on the carbon Evo but the Wellfleet sounds balanced through the left and right channels. The Wellfleet immediately performed better than I had anticipated. I would describe the Wellfleet as sounding very detailed without being overly analytical. I can now listen for hours without any fatigue. Highly recommended.
