“The smart decanter is a quick and easy way to decant your wine. It does a good job but it does have a couple of flaws. The varietal list on the app is not extensive enough, therefore you don’t know if the wine is being decanted enough or too much. Also the carafe drips when you pour the decanted wine. That is just a minor design flaw. Overall, it works great and makes a huge difference in the wine.”

“Having owned this equipment for a month now, I'm just not convinced. Yes, it does soften young wines (and make them more approachable), such as big, young American cabs and Zins, but I mainly drink Spanish Tempranillo Reservas and Gran Reservas (Rioja, Ribera del Duero) and Bordeaux wine. These wines are complex and I feel it does not have the same effect as traditional decanting. Again, it does soften these wines, but "3 mins" in the machine, is nowhere near as effective as "3 hours in a decanter". I have experimented a lot, and for example, I recently decanted half a bottle of a good $40 ten year old Gran Reserva Rioja for 4 hours and then I poured the other half in the machine and gave it a 4 minute blast and compared the wines. Completely different! The half that had been traditionally discounted for four hours had completely opened up and was an absolute delight to drink, and the one that had been in the machine for four minutes and really just “softened” and was still very closed. If you drink young, inexpensive wines, then this does make a difference, making them softer and more approachable, but if you enjoy more expensive older and more complex wines, don’t waste your money. Very disappointed in my $500 purchase.”

“This was the perfect gift. We tried it last night and used the smartphone app. The Paso Robles Cab I had would require 1 hour 35 minutes in a normal decanter. However, with a few presses of the buttons, my wine was ready in under 2 minutes. We had a test glass and then the decanted wine and you could tell the difference. Plus, it was cool to watch.”
