Very stiff and difficult to adjust, but way better than the cheap one I had. I'm sure it will eventually loosen up.

The compass works well after a good deal of work loosening the joint. A little shy on the fit and finish.

This compass defines the word "heavyduty". I've had the flimsy tin ones and the mushy plastic ones this is certalnly not that. The pencil holder worked fine, the legs stay where I put them. It made an accurate circle with the arc lining up with where it started. Very satisfied!

New out of the package, the threads for the pencil holder were so loose the screw could spin freely. This makes it unable to hold a pencil, and makes the compass unusable. I could tap a larger thread size, and use a larger screw, but as other reviews mention, the motion is also very tight past the first few inches, so precision suffers. I'm going to return it.

Yes, heavy duty. But the joint is SO tight it's extremely difficult, not impossible, to set the compass quickly and accurately. I've tried oil and articulating to joint hundreds of times...still too tight. Some friction is desirable but this is nuts. And the scribe ("pointy end") needed sharpening. I cannot recommend.
