Recently purchased at Richmond (VA) while on sale for $180. Upon disassembly found that the chip breaker did not make good contact with the blade. Showed the plane to Woodcraft’s specialist, Bert Lachinger, who immediately declared the plane faulty. He took it to the store front staff, and I received another brand new replacement plane on the spot. This plane passed muster and I’ve used it to square out a 4”x60” rough red oak board. (along with my old #4). That’s the only use so far and it performed well. Appreciate Woodcraft’s prompt response!

I’ve had mine for a number of years now, and I am quite fond. I have the 4, 6 and 7 as well. I purchased the number 5 first. It comes flat with a thick iron and well tuned chip breaker. The depth adjustment knob has very minimal backlash. Especially, compared to old Stanley planes. It functions great with a high level of tolerance.

I’m on the newer side of woodworking, and have built up my tool collection through Craigslist and yard sales. This is the first plane I have owned, and it’s the only new tool in my collection. The first thing I noticed upon unpacking was a ding on the edge between the sole and side of the plane. It created a burr that would scratch the surface of any stock, if I had tried to use it. I contacted customer service who said it’s a quick fix via sand paper and a flat surface. I have used the plane to flatten a large 6/4 board of white oak and it performed alright (after a bit of honing). My rating is more a reflection of the quality control, seeing as the item appeared to be dropped at some point, and still shipped out as “new”. If I were to go back, I would save up a little longer and splurge on higher quality for something I know would be mint right out of the box.
