I ordered one of these knife "kits" to make a gift for a good friend. I ended up getting another one for myself. It's a beautiful blade, love the damascus steel. Sharpens easily and retains a good edge for a good while. This is my first higher quality kitchen knife, and I am definitely impressed. As a hand tool woodworker, I appreciate a sharp tool. This knife surpasses any knife I've used before. It cuts an over ripe tomato effortlessly. I threw the little alloy rivets away and used some brass rod for pins. The edge of the bolster needed a little bit of trimming with a file to get a good fit against the handle. Tang had a very small amount of bend to it that clamping would have taken care of, but I went ahead and trimmed the wood blank to fit. Hey, I'm a woodworker, a little custom trimming comes naturally, and I didn't want the handle to separate down the road. Other than those two minor issues, the knife was flawless. Friend was very happy with his, and I have been really enjoying using this beautiful knife.

I just completed this knife kit. The knife came well-packaged, was straight, and included rivets. I used blood wood for the scales. Makes a pretty knife.

I purchased two of these knives to give as gifts. They are very sharp and nice looking but I ran into the same problem with both knives. There is a ridge where the bolster and tang meet making it impossible for the knife scale to sit up against the bolster. In addition, one of the knives had an additional spur on the bolster. I was able to grind the spur down but I couldn't grind the ridge. I had to chamfer the knife scale to make it fit. It was not an ideal solution and the scale did not rest completely against the bolster but I didn't have time to return the knives so I had to make do. Otherwise the knives are beautiful.

Th3se knives while having good steel, and potential for a fine knife, are not completed in Japan. They are forged and shaped, and then shipped to Taiwan, for the welding of a tang to the blade, and to be tempered. So you will get those problems now and then, depending which Taiwanese is doing the welding, and or tempering. Too bad the knives are not completed in Japan, with better quality control, in the process. Also too bad they don't forge the entire knife, with the tang, instead of sending the knife to Taiwan to have a tang welded to it, and then ground, and tempered. But, as it is said, ...... "It is what it is,"
