“These are really good irons and even better value compared to other brands. But if you are getting this for a Vintage 5 1/2, check the age of your plane. Prior to 1939, irons were 2 1/4 inches wide, not the 2 3/8" used in later models.”

“If the cutter in my Woodriver #6 is representative of this item (which is a reasonable assumption), the steel is quite brittle. A keen edge will fracture quickly and easily, leaving a saw-toothed tip. The resulting tracks in planed surfaces will be anything but smooth and far from what one desires from a premium hand plane. At first, I thought there might be debris of some nature fouling the cutter. Then, after close examination under 12x magnification and repeated sharpening (a simple honing wont get past the damage), the problem was clear and simple. Poor quality steel.”
