This product is more expensive than some off brand models but the longer 1 1/2 inch shaft and heavy gauge ferule make it very worthwhile. I like to use contrasting woods glued together for my handle stock. I also like to harden my threads with some CA glue and activator. I would recommend drilling the hole in the handle a bit longer than the 1 1/2 inch minimum requirement. I taper my handle to finish the same size as the outside of the ferule and size the middle of the handle to be tapered down from the ferule outside dimension and back up to a rounded end so that smaller hands will not slip and that the end can be pushed with the palm of the hand. I sand my handle through the grits up to 600 with the rear still attached to the live center. Then I cut off the end and sand the end grain until smooth. Lastly I like to use a friction finish on the handle while it is still on the mandrel. I will then test fit the scoop onto the handle. I like to finish with my best looking handle side facing up. If the scoop is slightly off I sand the mandrel end on a flat surface and tighten it again until it finishes where it want it. I then take it loose and add a drop of CA glue to the threads before tightening it up one last time. Lastly I scrub my handle with a grey Scotchbrite pad and finally spray on a couple light coats of lacquer. I have not gotten any complaints from this method.

Just amazing. I'm in love with it for how sturdy it is, the fact that my dad was able to turn me the handle for a great way to think about him, and for the sheer power it has cutting through IC. I wonder why more scoops aren't this shape? I can't recommend it enough. Just love it.

However, you can not sell these and make a profit at this price. When you consider all the materials required to finish a complete ice cream scope, you can find only a few large cities where you can sell and make a small profit.

I have looked at several different ice cream scoops from different vendors. These are the best! Nice brushed stainless steel, and the hawks bill shape is great for even the hardest ice cream. The best part of all is the design and strength. I have seem many where the part inserting into a wood handle is quite short, and I could easily see the handle snapping right off. These extend over 1 1/2" into the handle, plus the nice ferrule adds still more strength. I personally do not like having to deal with epoxy for another product's un-threaded rod, nor a threaded insert. I drill a 11/32 hole, and tap using a 3/8"x16 tap. You will need either a tap with the shaft smaller than 3/8", an extra long tap, or grind down the upper shaft so you can tap about 1 3/4" deep. This makes a very strong system, and is easily unscrewed if desired or needed.

I build these kits a little different. I drill the hold larger and put a 3/8 16 tpi insert in the handle. I still epoxy the ring on, but the scoop is removable for cleanup

I needed a new scoop so I ordered this stainless steel scoop. It's very well designed and makes scooping even hard ice cream easy. I don't do wood turning so I carved the handle. I wish I could include a photo of it. I'm pleased with the results and will probably make another one.
