Unfortunately I purchased this kanna and let it sit in its box for ages before taking it out and tuning it. Its possible I got a bad egg. And its BAD. The blade and chip breaker had their corners ground away FROM the manufacturer. Even after proper uradashi the sides were already too wide from the factory grinding. THIS IS A BAD THING. The chip breaker is practically unusable with hours of work. The steel pin is bent into a upside down U shape with major cracks where the pin was inserted. There more issues with the blade and chip breaker.. the list goes on and on... As I said I probably got a bad egg. So look in the box, take the blade out. Examine it. Make sure everything is ok. My local store only cares about 90 days on a receipt. Doesnt matter if its unopened. Since I'm stuck with bad stock I put the hours in to try and restore it. She will never make beautiful shavings.

This plane seems to be good quality overall for a very budget japanese plane. I bought it with the intention of making a roughing / scrub plane (herashi kanna), and thought that I would need to open the mouth up quite a bit to allow for the thicker shavings. No need; the gap between the edge of the blade and the mouth open was at least an 3/16". On the other hand, the dai body needed no tuning of either the sole or the blade mortise. The blade seems decent, I was able to put a razor sharp edge without a lot of work. Overall, if you need a very fine (budget) smoothing plane, I'd recommend other brands like the Senkichi 65mm for the same money. If you want a roughing plane, pick this up. The 50mm size is more suitable for a scrub plane in my opinion.
